If you’re tired of throwing your hair into a high ponytail like I am, here is your step-by-step guide on how to upgrade your workout hairstyle.
Not only is the classic pony getting kind of old, but they never seem to stay in place and end up as a frumpy mess on your head. I’ve partnered with Benjamin Beau Salon to show you some sweat proof options on how to style your hair before AND after your workout. Whether you’re doing pulses at the Barre or whipping your pony at your Indoor Spin class, these hairstyles will have you looking fierce, effortless, and of course… fabulous!
These styles are all easy enough to create at home that even those who have two left hands (like myself) can master them. Not only that, but a lot of us have very little time to workout much less shower and style our hair! So not only are these hairstyles easy to create and totally hair flip approved, but with a few simple steps can be turned into “girl on the town” masterpieces.
Pony with a twist (or braid) Workout Hairstyle
Supplies Needed: Boar Bristle Brush, Firm Hold hairspray (humidity resistant) to tame fly-away, small + large hair ties.
PRE WORKOUT
Step One
From the hairline, take one inch piece of hair aligning with the temple and do a regular 3-piece braid. Continue braiding until you have just a few inches at the bottom then tie with a small rubber hair tie. (Repeat on other side of head)
Step Two
Gather remaining hair (not braided) into a high pony tail. Smooth any bumps with the Boar Bristle Brush.
Step Three
Once hair is gathered and smooth, add the 2 braids you created to the pony tail and tie all hair together with large hair tie.
Step Four
To finish off the look, spray fly aways down with firm hold hair spray and get ready to SLAY that workout!
One Step Further
– If you want to get a little fancier, take the small braids from pony tail and wrap them around the base of your pony tail covering the hair tie and using bobby pins to keep them in place.
Notes from the Stylist:
“Be sure hair that is being braided comes from directly off of the hairline to make sure braids remain visible.”

POST WORKOUT HAIRSTYLE
Step One
Grab a large barrel curling iron and take large sections from the pony tail to add curls

Tease Me Bun Workout Hairstyle
Supplies Needed: Doughnut bun cushion, teasing brush, hair ties, bobby pins, and firm hold hairspray
PRE WORKOUT
Step One
Flip head upside down to gather into a very high pony on the crown of your head
Step Two
Smooth out any bumps just as before using brush and once smooth, tie with large hair tie securely
Step Three
Insert pony tail to the doughnut cushion with the cushion at the base of the pony
Step Four
Separate hair into sections then using the teasing brush, create textures and volume. (Go crazy here with that teasing! The more volume the better.)
Step Five
Taking one section at a time, wrap around the doughnut cushion and begin to cover completely.
Pro tip: For a more natural effect and easy coverage, wrap sections in opposite directions, alternating clockwise and counterclockwise.
Finish it off {extras}
Take one of the strands of hair and braid it using the same technique as the first look to add a little personality to your bun.

POST WORKOUT
Probably the easiest of all the looks, you’ll just need to spray with hair spray to hold down any fly-aways that may have occurred during your workout and BOOM you’re out the door and looking chic as hell.

High on Braids Workout Hairstyle
Supplies Needed: Doughnut bun cushion, hair ties, bobby pins, and firm hold hairspray
PRE WORKOUT
Step One
Repeat steps 1-3 of “Tease Me Bun” hairstyle
Step Two
Rather than teasing, once hair is separated into sections, you’ll braid each individually and tie off with a small rubber hair tie, leaving a few inches at the bottom to pull and make into a loose braid.
Step Three
After braiding all sections (total of 4-5), make sure each braid is secured tightly so you’re able to pull braids and add volume to them.
Start by holding the tie end of the braid firmly with one hand, the other hand will pull a small amount of hair starting at the hair tie and working your way to the top of the braid.
*This part is a little tricky and may take some getting used to, but remember that it doesn’t need to be perfect and the messier the better!*
Step Four
Wrap each strand in either clockwise or counterclockwise directions around the doughnut cushion and securing along the way with bobby pins to keep the braid in place and VIOLA!
Notes from the Stylist:
“Depending on thickness of hair, you may not need the doughnut cushion. For those with very fine hair, the cushion adds volume.”

POST WORKOUT
Step One & Only
Same as before, spray down any fly aways with firm hold hairspray and you’re gucci!

Thick Braided Pigtails
Supplies Needed: Sectioning Tool (something with a point), hair ties & your fingers!
PRE WORKOUT
Step One
Section hair into two large groups, either with a straight line down the center or try a zig-zag motion to spice things up!
Step Two
Perform the basic 3 strand braids, making sure to make them tight against your scalp. Leave about 4 inches at the end of the braid. Don’t ask, just do!
Step Three
Start by firmly pinching the hair tie with one hand and using the other, loosely pull braid out to create a spread out effect starting from the bottom and working your way up.
~
POST WORKOUT
Supplies Needed: Diffuser + Awapuhi Wild Ginger Texturizing Sea Spray OR Flat Iron
Step One
Lightly saturate the braids with Texturizing Sea Spray
Step Two
Press diffuser into braid to dry the spray into the braid
Step Three
Remove hair ties and separate braids to reveal beautifully perfect mermaid beach waves that will last all day!
Running short on time?
Switch out the sea spray and diffuser for a flat-iron! While braids are still in, press hot flat-iron on braid going up and down then let cool and remove hair ties. Same beachy waves in half the time! *Use a light hair spray to hold waves in place after removing braids*
