(CLOSED) Over the past couple months, Blue Honey Yoga Fitness (located on West 6th street) has been transitioning from just holding yoga classes to becoming a fitness studio as well! The facility itself is one room with a wall of mirrors, barre, and exercise equipment.
Today, I attended a Tabata class at the studio. Tabata is a form of high intensity interval training. Each class follows a specific guideline of 20 seconds of high intensity intervals such as sprinting, sandbag slams, or core work. Followed by 10 seconds of rest and you repeat that for 8 rounds resulting in a total of 4 minutes. If you want the full background on Tabata training and the man who created it, click here.
My class consisted of the following exercises in order:
Round 1:
- 20 seconds of jumping jacks with weights in each hand (5lbs)
- 20 seconds of lunges with lateral side raises (5lbs)
- 20 seconds of a squat hold while performing hammer curls (5lbs)
- 20 seconds of a situp hold with legs elevated and small punches across the body to work the core
Round 2:
- 20 seconds of sandbag burpees (15lbs)
- 20 seconds of forearm to hands plank
- 20 seconds sit ups with sandbag (15lbs)
- 20 seconds of side shuffle across the room back and forth with sandbag (15lbs)
Between each 20 second interval we took a 10 second break, and between each round we took a 1 minute break. The entire workout only took about 35 minutes and was extremely challenging on the body. I was breathing heavily and I left the class in a sweaty mess (which was great).
These workouts are great for cardiovascular conditioning and overall building strength! I’m so glad that I attended and I will definitely be coming back for more. I have been to a few of these classes now and can already tell the difference in my overall conditioning strength.
An instructor that held the class this morning, Greg, is a trainer at multiple studios around Austin! He really pushes you to go past what you think you can do, to try for the heavier weight and encourages you the whole time!
If you are looking to challenge yourself both mentally and physically, I would absolutely recommend the Tabata class! I love going to it because when I leave I know that I have just gotten in a great workout, and end up feeling really proud of myself.
Go check it out!
