We’re at Blue Honey Yoga + Fitness again talking about the amazing Tabata class! I wrote about this class a while back so if you want more details on the studio and the first workout I did with them you can check it out here. The idea of Tabata is to maximize fat burn while also building strong, lean muscles!
Usually about 3 or 4 people show up to the 6:45am Tabata class hosted at Blue Honey Yoga, but today it was more of a personal training session (aka I was the only one, yay!). I actually didn’t mind being the only one since I have been going to these early morning sessions for a while and have really gotten to know the trainer. He knew I had an athletic background in swimming and with that, decided to push me harder than usual. I was completely okay with that seeing as I am leaving for vacation and will be in a bikini about 99% of the time!
The typical Tabata workout usually consists of 8 rounds that are 20 seconds of “work” and then 10 seconds rest.
Round 1:
- 20 seconds of 180 degree squat jumps w/ sandbag slams (rotating in the air as you jump) – working one side
- 20 seconds of push-ups w/ one hand on the sandbag and the other on the floor alternating hands
- 20 seconds lateral lunges w/ sandbag press up in the center (alternating legs each time)
- 20 seconds Russian twist sandbag slams
Round 2:
- 20 seconds speed skater (length of my yoga mat)
- 20 seconds push-ups w/ shoulder taps (as shown in my Instagram)
- 20 seconds suicides (running to different points across the room and back)
- 20 seconds frog jumps across the room w/ sandbag held against my chest
Each of the 20 second intervals consisted of a 10 second break in-between as well as a 1 minute break between each round. The entire workout should only take about 35 minutes, but me and the trainer would sometimes get side-tracked talking about places we want to travel too and nutrition. I mean, what else would fitness fanatics talk about?
It was yet another amazing Tabata session, and I’m so glad I woke up early and got it done. Each time I go, I am able to challenge my muscles and push past what my mind is telling them they can’t do. It helps when the exercises are only 20 seconds long to be able to push yourself that much harder! This is one of my favorite ways to build strong, lean muscles and overall just become more physically fit.
And if you have never done a Tabata class, don’t be scared of it! You go at your own pace, and the trainers are there to help guide you and push you along the way. What doesn’t challenge you doesn’t change you. Right? Right.
